It is thought there may have been an early dwelling on this site, potentially dating back to Domesday.

The present building is substantially 17th Century, but the actual date of the different parts varies. Unlike today, much building in the past was piecemeal. Most of the fabric is local stone, but the old malthouse at the rear retains the traditional Devon cob. This has the remains of the maltings floor, and is adjacent to a Devon kiln, where the malt would have been roasted.

William John Gibbings from Clyst St. George, moved into the Inn in 1897, and the family has been here ever since. The current licensee is Caroline Cheffers-Heard, his Great Grand-daughter. She is the fourth generation, her daughter Riannon will be the fifth, and grandchildren Amelia and Bea, will be the sixth generation.
